Greek public universities teach almost entirely in Greek, and entry for Greek-speaking students runs through the national Panhellenic examinations.
A growing number of public universities now also run separate English-taught bachelor's programmes with tuition fees, applied to directly on the IB, and these are the realistic route for an IB student applying from Denmark: about twenty were listed on the Study in Greece platform in September 2026, at €4,500–€17,000 a year. Beyond that there is the private, American-accredited college sector.
The University of Athens runs a 6-year MD taught entirely in English with clinical training across sixteen Athens hospitals
The overwhelming majority of Greek bachelor teaching is in Greek - do not assume a department has an English track
All Greek universities (ΑΕΙ, πανεπιστήμια) are state institutions.
All Greek universities (ΑΕΙ, πανεπιστήμια) are state institutions. The technological institutes (ΤΕΙ) have been merged into them. A few other public academies sit beside the universities. Private colleges (κολλέγια) teach foreign universities' degrees, and since law 5094/2024 foreign universities may open non-state branches.
Every public university, from Athens and Thessaloniki to Crete and the Aegean. Mostly taught in Greek. Entry is by Panhellenic exams for Greek schools, by the ministry's foreign-nationals route for foreign school graduates, or by direct application to the few English-taught programmes.
Public institutions outside the universities: teacher training for vocational education (ΑΣΠΑΙΤΕ), tourism education (ΑΣΤΕ), and the ecclesiastical academies. The ministry's foreign-nationals circular is addressed to them alongside the universities.
On the same ministry route; not covered further on this site.
Private, fee-paying, taught in English, awarding a foreign partner's or US-accredited degree rather than a Greek state degree. The American College of Greece (Deree) is one.
Non-profit branches of foreign universities, licensed under law 5094/2024. The ministry re-issued licences to the Keele and York branches in August 2026 after Council of State rulings annulled the first ones.
New, and still being argued in the courts. What these branches offer to a 2027 applicant is not covered here.

Apply directly to each university.
Decide which route you are taking. For an IB student at a school in Denmark there are three, and they are genuinely different: an English-taught programme at a public university, a Greek-taught public place through the Ministry’s foreign-nationals category, or a private English-language college such as ACG/Deree.
If you want a Greek-taught public place, the Ministry is your deadline, not the university. The αλλοδαποί-αλλογενείς window is about eight days in early July, on the Ministry’s own platform, and the system locks when it closes.
Find the programme. The Ministry of Education runs a programme finder at studies.minedu.gov.gr covering bachelor’s and master’s programmes in Greek and English, and Study in Greece runs the @SiG platform.
For an English-taught programme, apply directly to it. Each one runs its own application on its own timetable, and some publish no deadline at all — email the programme office rather than assuming.
Prepare English proof. The Athens MD requires IELTS 7.5 overall with at least 6.5 in each component, TOEFL 80, or Cambridge FCE at B2. The Ancient Greece BA requires TOEFL 88 or IELTS 6.5 with at least 5.5 in each component.
Have every document ready before you apply, not after. The Ministry route requires you to hold the full set at the moment of submission, and false or missing papers carry a two-year exclusion.
Pay the deposit on acceptance, to the deadline in your own admission letter. The Athens MD takes a non-refundable EUR 5,000 deposit followed by two instalments of EUR 12,000 in total, in September and January.
As an EU citizen, move to Greece and register locally; there is no visa to apply for.
The English-taught programmes select on your IB result and English proof, and the Athens MD adds an online interview. Each sets its own deadline. Greek-taught public places are allocated through the Panhellenic examinations, with a separate special category for foreign nationals of non-Greek descent (αλλοδαποί-αλλογενείς) administered by the Ministry of Education on its own platform, with an eight-day application window in early July and a courier deadline the day after it closes. The mechanics of that category - which programmes carry a quota, how a foreign qualification is scored against it, and whether an IB Diploma needs any recognition step first - are not set out on the announcement that opens it, and were not published on an official page on 23 September 2026. Check with the Ministry before relying on it.

Greece has a national route for a foreign qualification. It is the "αλλοδαποί - αλλογενείς" special category, run by the Ministry of Education on its own platform at https://exams-foreigner.it.minedu.gov.gr, and it is how a non-Greek applicant with a foreign school-leaving qualification competes for a place on a Greek-taught public programme without sitting the Panhellenic examinations. The window is eight days long. For the 2026-2027 year the Ministry announced, in Greek, that candidates were "καλούνται να υποβάλουν ηλεκτρονικά (μέσω διαδικτύου) αίτηση - μηχανογραφικό δελτίο" from "Πέμπτη 2 Ιουλίου μέχρι και την Πέμπτη 9 Ιουλίου 2026" - Thursday 2 July to Thursday 9 July 2026. There is no grace: "Μετά την παρέλευση της παραπάνω προθεσμίας υποβολής δεν θα γίνονται δεκτές εκπρόθεσμες αιτήσεις ... καθώς κλειδώνει το σύστημα" - after the deadline the system locks and late applications are not accepted. You must already hold every supporting document when you apply. You may not also apply in the "Έλληνες του Εξωτερικού" category in the same year, and false documents mean deletion plus exclusion from every Greek admission process for the following two academic years. The 2027-2028 announcement had not appeared on 23 September 2026; the Ministry publishes it about a day before the window opens, so watch https://www.minedu.gov.gr/panelladikes-eksetaseis-pistopoiitika/anakoinwseis-allodapoi from late June 2027. The eight days fall exactly when IB results are released, so assemble the documents in June rather than waiting.

A second deadline a day after the first, sent a different way; missing it wastes the application. For the 2026-2027 year the Ministry set the courier postmark date as "Παρασκευή 10 Ιουλίου 2026" - Friday 10 July 2026, delivery accepted 10:00 to 14:00, and by courier only. What must go in the envelope is a printed copy of the submitted αίτηση - μηχανογραφικό δελτίο and a copy of the required Υπεύθυνη Δήλωση (sworn declaration). The full set of qualifying documents is handed in later, to the department you are admitted to, on the enrolment dates it sets. The 2027-2028 dates were not published on 23 September 2026.

After this the door closes.
The page gives its deadline for one year only: "Application Deadlines for the academic year 2026-2027: 1 August for applicants required to issue a student visa (D1.1) / 1 August for applicants not required to issue a student visa (D1.1)". The university has published no 2027-2028 date; 1 August 2026 is the precedent. On 23 September 2026 the page still displayed "Now Open" above a deadline that had passed seven weeks earlier, so email the programme rather than planning from the page. Two payment dates come after admission and are published only as months: tuition is 6,000 euros a year in two instalments, the first "due by the end of June" and the second "due by the end of January", with a deposit possibly required to secure the place. Entry is on an IB Diploma with an indicative average of 70 per cent, plus TOEFL 88 or IELTS 6.5.
Hard deadline
After this the door closes.
For 2026-27 the programme's application platform was open from 18 December 2025 to 30 April 2026: it "will remain open from December 18th, 2025 until April 30th, 2026". The 2027-28 dates are not yet published, so last cycle's window is the precedent to plan around. The IB on its own qualifies you: 36 points including three higher-level subjects, two of them from Physics, Chemistry and Biology. UCAT or MCAT is one of several alternative qualifications (the requirements page asks for "at least one of the following"), not an extra requirement. Final-year students apply on predicted grades: the application page has a section for "Applicants who are in the final high school grade" asking for "Predicted grades of International Baccalaureate (IB)". Clause A of the requirements page still asks for a diploma from "July 2025 or earlier", so confirm with md.admissions@uoa.gr that you may apply for 2027 entry on predicted grades. English: IELTS 7.5 with 6.5 in each component, TOEFL 80 or Cambridge FCE at B2. Shortlisted applicants have an online interview.
Applies to: applicants holding an offer
Hard deadline
After this the door closes.
A per-applicant deadline with no public date, which is exactly the kind that gets missed. The programme says: "An admission letter (conditional or unconditional) will be sent to you if you have successfully passed the interview. To secure a place in the program you will need to proceed with paying the amount of €5,000, within the deadline set in the admission letter." The deposit is non-refundable and is followed by two further instalments totalling 12,000 euros, in September and January. Nothing on the site says how long you get, so read the admission letter the day it arrives and diarise the date it gives you.

The English-taught programmes charge the same fee to EU and non-EU students.
The English-taught programmes charge the same fee to EU and non-EU students. As listed on Study in Greece in September 2026: €4,500 (Aegean) to €8,000 a year for most bachelor's, €12,000–€17,000 for Medicine. University of Athens MD in English: EUR 17,000 a year, with the page stating 'Tuition fees for the academic year 2026-2027 for EU and non-EU citizens are EUR 17.000'. University of Athens BA in Archaeology, History and Literature of Ancient Greece: EUR 6,000 a year, paid in two instalments in June and January. Whether Greek-taught public bachelor study is free for EU citizens is not confirmed here. (2026-2027 (MD); BAAG page undated but current on 2026-09-22)
Same as EU for the English-taught public programmes: for example EUR 17,000 a year for the Athens MD, EUR 6,000 for the BA in Ancient Greece and for AUEB's International Business and Technology. (2026-2027 (MD); BAAG page undated)
As an EU/EEA citizen you have the right to live and study in Greece and will normally register locally for stays over three months.
As an EU/EEA citizen you have the right to live and study in Greece and will normally register locally for stays over three months. Non-EU students need a student visa and residence permit. The specific Greek procedures, documents and timescales are not confirmed here - the Study in Greece visa page directs non-EU students to a third-party visa service rather than setting out the rules.
As an EU citizen bring your EU health insurance card for necessary care in the Greek public system. Detailed requirements for students, and what non-EU students must arrange, are not confirmed here; ask the university.
If you hold Greek citizenship, you do not register a right of residence or prove your fee status, and Greece's own student grants and loans are open to you on their ordinary terms; check them, because some depend on where you have lived.
Your IB is still a foreign qualification here, so the IB entry rules still apply to you.
